I mean the IRA (Russia's online disinformation/influence branch during the 2016 election cycle) at its absolute peak had 1000 employees, with roughly 100 of them specifically targeting the US, and they reached 176 million Americans on Facebook alone.

I read this last night and have not been able to look at the case situation the same way since. The drama framing has been doing a lot of work to make this look smaller than it is. Stop and apply Pablo's lens for a second.

The IRA at peak fielded 100 people specifically targeting US political content. That's the operational baseline. A Discord of around 100 obsessives treating it as a full time job, amplified by Hasan Piker's 2.8 million followers as the laundering node, is in raw operational terms the same order of magnitude as a Russian state influence operation against the United States. The mechanism is different. The IRA bought Facebook ads. The snarker network produces content that Piker likes and retweets into the centre of Democratic-aligned youth media. The reach and structural effect are comparable. The labour comes from obsession rather than paychecks, which makes it more durable rather than less, because there's no funding source to cut off.

Every marker is present. If the SIO still existed this case would be sitting on someone's desk. The reason it isn't getting that analytic treatment is not that the case is weak.
