I saw a post asking why the joy is 'flavoured' when in fact its a capsule that is swallowed whole. Im pretty sure they address this is the story. Different flavours are actually different drug formulation. And like antihiatimes you need to switch them from time to time to stop your body building resistance. Plus different variants work better for some rather than others, not unlike real pharmaceuticals.

There are currently four flavours of Joy pill available to the citizens of Wellington Wells: Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry and blackberry (though this is only to be supplied to the bobbies before the citizens). It appears that these flavours are not provided for choice, but so a wider proportion of the population is able to ingest them, suggesting that the chemical composition of each flavour is slightly different.

Wastrels are Wellies who are unable to take Joy for one reason or another, and a note from one unfortunate (dead) Wastrel reveals that she was waiting for the fourth flavour, Coconut, to become available. She hoped this would enable her to tolerate Joy, and like everyone else, forget the past.

Its said that Chocolate and Vanilla came first, Developed by Haworth Labs, however Harry Haworth knew that the ingredients required for making Joy would eventually run out due to the cessation of trade across the Britannia Bridge. He tried focusing on Phrenology (a real life Pseudo-science) but was replaced by Anton Verloc after a mysterious disappearance.

Sally and Dr Verloc developed Strawberry Joy together out of what they could find around Wellington Wells. However she left with all her lab notes after a confrontation with Verloc.

Sally specially makes her own version of Joy, Blackberry Joy, which is favoured by bobbies as it give them a clearer head and state of mind, but is notably more addictive than other varieties.

Coconut Joy is the last flavour to be in development but was never actually released. It is the only one to be multi-coloured. While all other Joy pills are liquid filled capsules with a single colour to represent their flavour, coconut Joy is Brown and White. Interestingly, the gaseous Coconut found in Haworth Labs (Formula 752-44) is pink.

It was developed using multiple formulation over the years until it was decided that Coconut was now to alter the user's brain chemistry in such a way that they would be permanently happy. This was after multiple failed attempts to make a coconut flavour and due to dwindling supplies.

However, after Verloc and Sally fell out, development of Coconut Joy was left to Verloc alone and he could never produce and release a working batch. He is solely blamed for bad batches of Joy which caused riots, which were labelled Rebeautificstion projects to hide the truth.
