where's the line between agent framework helping vs slowing you down?

at what task complexity does an agent framework actually start paying off?
asking because i started hand-rolling my agent loop two months ago after langchain ate my debugging week one too many times. now i write more glue code than i used to, but the trace is sane and the ship cycle is faster.
below "multi-step retrieval with memory" it feels lighter without a framework. above that, i don't know. haven't built one that complex without one.
genuinely asking where other people land. is your breakpoint task complexity, team size, or just personal pain tolerance.
